Pinning a YouTube video to a location on ClipMap takes under two minutes. This step-by-step tutorial walks you through every feature – from pasting a URL to capturing precise timestamps and dragging the map pin to the exact spot.
You need a free ClipMap account to add clips. If you haven't registered yet, click the 👤 icon in the top navigation bar and select Register. Verification takes under a minute.
You'll also need the YouTube URL of the video you want to pin. Any publicly available YouTube video works — full videos, shorts, or live streams that have been archived.
Find the pink floating button in the bottom-right corner of the map. If you're not logged in, clicking it will prompt you to sign in first. Once logged in, a form panel slides up from the bottom on mobile, or opens as an overlay on desktop.
Paste the full YouTube link into the first field. This can be in any format: youtube.com/watch?v=..., youtu.be/..., or a YouTube Shorts URL. The system extracts the video ID automatically.
After you paste a valid URL, ClipMap calls YouTube's oEmbed API to fetch the video title and channel name automatically. You'll see a ⏳ loading indicator. This usually takes under 2 seconds. The Title field will populate automatically — you don't need to type it.
The inline YouTube player preview appears below the URL field. Play the video to the exact moment relevant to the location. Click "▸ Start" to capture the current playback position as the start time, and "▸ Koniec" to capture the end time. These are recorded in seconds. You can also type seconds manually.
Select the country from the dropdown. Then start typing the city name in the city search field — an autocomplete list appears with matching cities. Click the correct one. The mini-map and coordinates update automatically to centre on that city.
The mini-map shows a draggable pin. Zoom in and drag the pin to the precise location where the clip was filmed — a specific street corner, building entrance, stage, or square. The coordinates shown above the mini-map update as you drag. Greater precision makes your clip more useful to other users.
Click the Submit button at the bottom of the form. Your clip is added to the map immediately and appears as a new pin at the selected location. Other users can find and vote on it right away.
A pin placed on the exact street corner where a performance took place is infinitely more useful than one placed on the edge of the city. Take the extra 30 seconds to zoom the mini-map to street level and drag the pin to the right building or square.
If you're pinning a 45-minute travel vlog because of a 90-second segment filmed in a specific market, set start and end times. Other users don't want to hunt through a long video to find the relevant moment.
A city tour video that visits five different neighbourhoods can legitimately be pinned five times — each with different timestamps and pin locations. This is a feature, not a bug. It makes the multi-location modal more useful for everyone.
💡 Tip: The Spotify URL field is optional. If the YouTube video is a music clip and there's a corresponding Spotify track, adding the link lets users jump directly to the song on Spotify from the clip sidebar.
⚠️ Important: Only add clips with a genuine geographic connection to the pinned location. Clips pinned to incorrect locations are frequently reported by the community and removed by moderators. Repeated false locations can result in account restrictions.
Your clip appears on the map immediately. It shows as a new pin at the pinned location and appears in the Newest filter results. Other users can upvote or downvote it, helping it rise or fall in the Trending rankings. You receive reputation points for each clip you add.
If your clip is reported by other users, our moderation team will review it. If it violates our Terms of Service, it will be removed and you'll receive a notification.
