Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ClipMap – the interactive world map for YouTube clips.

πŸ—ΊοΈ About ClipMap

ClipMap is a community-driven interactive world map where users can discover and share YouTube video clips pinned to specific real-world geographic locations. Whether it's a live concert in Paris, a street performance in Tokyo, or a folk music recording from a village in Poland – ClipMap lets you explore what people have filmed in any place on Earth. Think of it as a living atlas of video moments, organised by geography rather than by channel or topic.
ClipMap was created by a small team of developers and music enthusiasts who wanted a better way to discover location-based video content. The platform is independently operated and is not affiliated with YouTube or Google. For contact details, please visit our Contact page.
Yes, ClipMap is completely free. You can browse the map and watch clips without creating an account. Registration is only needed if you want to add your own clips or vote on existing ones. We keep the service free by showing non-intrusive ads from Google AdSense.
ClipMap is currently available in 7 languages: Polish πŸ‡΅πŸ‡±, English πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§, Spanish πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ, German πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ, French πŸ‡«πŸ‡·, Japanese πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅, and Russian πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί. You can switch the interface language at any time using the language selector in the top navigation bar. The app automatically detects your browser language on first visit.
ClipMap works on any modern device with a web browser, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. It is a Progressive Web App (PWA), which means you can also install it on your device's home screen for quick access. The design is fully responsive and adapts to all screen sizes. We support Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

πŸ“ Adding Clips

Adding a clip is simple:
  • Click the οΌ‹ Add Clip button (bottom right corner of the map).
  • Paste the YouTube video URL into the form.
  • The title is fetched automatically – you don't need to type it.
  • Select the country and city, or drag the pin on the mini-map to the exact location.
  • Optionally set start and end timestamps if only part of the video is relevant to the location.
  • Click Submit.
You must be logged in to add a clip. Register for free if you don't have an account yet.
You can add any publicly available YouTube video that is meaningfully connected to a real geographic location. Great examples include: live music performances at a specific venue, street art documentation, travel vlogs filmed in a particular city, nature recordings from a specific national park, historical footage from a particular place, local news clips, or cultural event recordings. The clip must comply with our Terms of Service and YouTube's own community guidelines.
Yes. When adding a clip, you can specify a start time and an end time in seconds. This is ideal for long videos where only a specific segment relates to the location – for example, a music video where a particular scene was filmed in Berlin, or a travel vlog where only minutes 3–7 show the location you want to pin. Use the in-form YouTube player preview to play the video and capture the exact timestamps with a single click.
The location should reflect where the content in the clip was actually filmed or where it has a meaningful geographic connection. You can be as precise as a specific street address or as general as a city. The more precise the better – a pin placed on the exact street corner where a performance took place is more useful to other users than one placed on the outskirts of the city.
Yes. Many videos feature multiple locations – for example, a city tour video might show landmarks in five different districts. You (or other users) can add the same YouTube URL with different timestamp ranges and different pin locations. The app will group these under the same video in the results panel, with a "More Locations" button in the sidebar so users can jump between all mapped segments.
Clips may be removed if they violate our Terms of Service: incorrect or misleading location data, inappropriate or prohibited content (violence, adult content, copyright abuse), spam, or duplicate submissions. If your clip was removed and you believe this was a mistake, please contact us at [email protected].

πŸ” Discovering Content

You can search by city in two ways: (1) Use the search bar at the top to type the city name – results will appear filtered by location. (2) Simply navigate the map by zooming and panning to the city you're interested in – pins for all clips in that area will appear on the map. Click any pin to open the clip sidebar and watch it directly.
Trending sorts clips by their net vote score (upvotes minus downvotes), showing the most community-approved clips first. Newest shows the most recently added clips first. You can activate these filters using the pill buttons in the search bar area on desktop, or through the hamburger menu on mobile. The filters work together with any active search query or location filter.
Yes. Open the results panel and use the advanced filter inputs. You can filter by: clip title, YouTube author/channel name, city, country, or paste a YouTube URL to find all location pins for a specific video. These filters can be combined – for example, find all clips by a specific artist in a specific country.
When a YouTube video has been pinned to more than one location on the map (by the same or different users), a "More Locations" button appears in the clip sidebar. Clicking it opens a video modal that shows all mapped segments of that video in a list. You can click each segment to jump to its timestamp in the player and see its pin highlighted on the map.

πŸ‘ Voting & Moderation

Registered users can upvote (πŸ‘) or downvote (πŸ‘Ž) any clip from the sidebar. Voting helps the community surface the best, most accurate, and most relevant clips. You can change your vote at any time. Clips with a high upvote score appear higher in Trending results.
Every clip has a 🚩 Report button at the bottom of the sidebar. Click it, select the reason (wrong location, wrong timestamp, inappropriate content, or other), and submit. Our moderation team reviews all reports. You must be logged in to submit a report.
Reports are reviewed by our moderation team typically within 24–48 hours. If the report is valid, the clip is removed or corrected. If you report a clip that contains illegal content (e.g., child exploitation material), it is escalated immediately. We do not notify the reporter of the outcome, but we do track all reports to identify repeat offenders.

πŸ”’ Privacy & Technical

Only if you explicitly click the "Show my location" button. In that case, your device's built-in GPS is used temporarily to centre the map on your current position. We do not log or store your GPS coordinates. This feature uses the standard browser Geolocation API and can be revoked at any time in your browser settings. See our full Privacy Policy for details.
No. ClipMap does not host, store, or re-encode any video content. All videos are embedded directly from YouTube using the official YouTube Embed API. The video files remain on YouTube's servers at all times. ClipMap only stores metadata: the YouTube URL, geographic coordinates, timestamps, and community data (votes, reports).
We collect: email address and display name (if registered), clips you add (YouTube URL, location, timestamps), votes you cast, reports you submit, and standard server logs (IP address, browser type, request timestamps) for security and diagnostic purposes. We also use Google AdSense, which may set cookies for interest-based advertising. See our Privacy Policy for full details including your rights under GDPR.
ClipMap is a free service. To cover server, development, and maintenance costs, we display non-intrusive advertisements provided by Google AdSense. Ads are placed in designated zones and do not obscure the map or interfere with core functionality. If you have concerns about ad personalisation, visit Google Ad Settings.
ClipMap requires an internet connection to load the map tiles, YouTube videos, and clip data from our servers. It is not designed for offline use. However, as a PWA, your browser may cache some app resources for faster loading on repeat visits. The map and videos themselves always require an active connection.
We appreciate bug reports! Please email us at [email protected] with a description of the issue, the device and browser you were using, and if possible a screenshot. You can also open an issue on our public repository if available. We aim to respond within 48 hours.
